     | The whole philosophy behind the South Beach Diet is nothing we haven’t heard before. Basically, you are supposed to limit carbs, saturated fats and excess sugars. This is what Atkins and other popular low carb weight loss plans preach. The only difference is that Atkins takes a casual approach to saturated fats, while South Beach limits them considerably. Even so, some of the claims of this weight loss program are slightly absurd. Lose 8-13 pounds in the first 2 weeks? What Dr. Agatston fails to mention is that almost all of the weight you lose is water weight-loss caused by carbohydrate restriction. Many people will gain this weight back when they start re-introducing carbs in phase two. Also, there isn’t much in the book about how complex carbs are actually good for you and don’t lead to overeating. If this were a complete weight loss program, there would be no need to cut out these carbs during phase one. While these criticisms are valid, I still feel the South Beach Diet is a good plan overall because it teaches you sensible long term eating habits which should keep your diet in balance even after you have reached your weight loss goals. | | |

     | Although I love the idea behind the South Beach Diet and find the basic premise of it a very smart way to lose weight, I found myself being very limited in what I could eat due to my lactose intolerance. I found it to be one of the hardest diets to stick to because many times snacks and meals are supposed to include cheese, but I can’t really eat cheese and the book offers almost nothing in the form of dairy alternatives. I found myself getting hungry more often and not losing weight as fast as I had hoped. While I really wanted South Beach to be the weight loss plan that worked for me, sadly I was left feeling unfulfilled. Hopefully there will be an updated version to Dr. Agaston’s book that provides a weight loss program that is more friendly to people like me. | | |
| The weight loss plan for people who like food |

     | I like food…well, I actually like food a lot. Which is why it has always been hard for me to stick to a weight loss program. Most of them only allow you to eat food that tastes like Styrofoam, so that once you complete the program you aren’t prepared to go back to eating normal human food. This always results in me gaining the weight back and then beginning the cycle anew with another weight loss plan. The South Beach Diet is the first weight loss plan that I’ve followed which actually allows me to eat real food that tastes good. Like all low carb diets, South Beach teaches you the perils of eating too many carbohydrates in your diet, but doesn’t ask you cut them out altogether. After the two week phase one period you are allowed to re-introduce carbs back into your diet, so long as it is in moderation. This isn’t hard since by that time your metabolism has been conditioned to not crave them so much, making it easier to put down the pasta and to continue to loose weight. Eating the South Beach way has been much easier than any low carb diet I have ever tried. The meals are sensible (and not just a bunch of meat, like other popular diets) and delicious. My cravings for carbs have dropped dramatically, making me eat much less than I used to. South Beach is the first weight loss program that has taught me that losing a few pounds doesn’t require you to lose your taste buds. | | |

     | I'm not sure what people are talking about that you lose water weight with South Beach. I have lost 25 Ilbs and it's not water weight. I acutally have a waist now. I have never felt better. South Beach encourages healthy eating and eating good carbs. The first phase I will admit was difficult, but I was comming off my sugar and junk food high. People actually think I look younger now as well. If I want to cheat once in a while I do and I don't gain the weight back. As with any other diet excersise is key. | | |
