It's about that time of year again when all of us allergy sufferers get a nice kick in the pants (or nose) from all the pollen floating around in the air. I especially suffer from post nasal drip, soar throat, watery eyes and all that other fun stuff.
Quercetin was mentioned in an article I read in an all natural health magazine earlier today. It was entitled Steps to Living Allergy Free and anything like that sounds pretty much too good to be true but I'll give anything a shot. It ranged from using a Neti Pot to drain the nasal passages as well as a list of recommended foods to keep your immune system strong and healthy.
It just so happens that I have one of those Moms that got into an all natural herbal remedies kick a few years back. She tries to buy organic foods and other all natural products when possible. Growing up I always took vitamins. Remember good old Flintstones Chewable Vitamins? I guess it stuck because I still take a multivitamin today. Unfortunately it is not as tasty as my old chewable vitamins. I decided to tell her about the article and see what she had to say about it since she stays pretty up to date on almost anything herbal.
What she told me was that Quercetin acts as an ant-inflammatory and actually prevents the production of histamine in the body (as it also mentioned in the article). In case you didn't know, histamine is what causes the runny nose and watery eyes that make us allergy sufferers so miserable. The other benefit of taking Quercetin is that you avoid the drowsiness and other side effects associated with over the counter anti-histamines. The article also recommends that you take Quercetin with Vitamin C to increase its effects as an antioxidant.
So I'm going to order some Quercetin with Vitamin C from Puritan's Pride this week and follow the recommended dosage on the bottle. Why Puritan's Pride you ask? Because my mommy told me so, which is a good enough reason for me. I will post a follow up in a few weeks and let you know how its working. If anyone has any experience taking Quercetin for allergy relief post your comments here.
